Use of Starting Pistolsposted by Peter Hart on18-08-2005
Following the recent launch of the Violent Crime Reduction Bill and its potential impact on racing starting pistols, the Home Office has been approached to clarify their position on starting pistols under the new Bill and potential grounds for an exemption. The information that came back from the Home Office was:
'Live firearms held on certificate and used with blank ammunition do not fall within the terms of the Bill because they are not imitation firearms. However, the importation, manufacture and sale of blank firing replicas which are not readily convertible to fire live ammunition would be banned. People who owned such weapons at the coming into force of any ban would be able to keep and use their weapons as before, but they would be unable to replace them and people new to race starting would not be able to buy such a weapon.'
'There is provision built into the Bill for exceptions and exemptions to be introduced by Statutory Instrument, and pistols for starting races might be considered for exemption. The Home Office will be consulting with stakeholders in due course.'

Salford Success - 7th August 2005posted by Howard Jones on13-08-2005
We must give an enormous thank you to Salford City Council, the Manchester Commonwealth Games Volunteers and all the people who officiated and made the British Biathle Championships the success it was on Sunday 7th August. This will be the venue for the 2006 Biathle World Championships, with some minor alterations, and has passed its test for staging a successful competition.
The weather was very warm and sunny and the water in the docks was almost as flat as glass. The early concerns regarding swimming in an old dock, just off the Manchester Ship Canal, were soon gone as the realisation of how clean the water was confirmed by the numbers of fish flourishing in it.
This event was also the qualifying competition for the 2005 Biathle World Championships to be staged in Monaco on 18th September so there were many quality competitors appearing from out of the woodwork.
As usual, the day started with the Youths E and in the absence of Jak McCourt who was away on holiday, it was Monty Wilson who took the honours from Hugo Fleming with Hannah Watts continuing her good form to win from Kathleen Rafferty.
Joanna Puckett won the Youths D Girls race from Grace Hobbs and Coco Allingham and Jordan Chadburn won the Boys Race from James Rafferty and Oscar Tweed. Samantha Preddy took the honours in the Youths C Girls Race with Sophie Corbidge just holding off Lucy Smith. Werner van Wyk comfortably won the Youths C Boys Race, having lead from the start. James Dawson and Steven Mason completed the medal positions.
As was to be expected, Denise Farnham led all of the Masters Ladies home, taking the 50+ title ahead of Julie Pym who took the 40+ title from Melanie Evans and Frances Todd. Margaret Smith and Gaye Nowak took the other 50+ medals. Sean Kinsey held off Mark Evans and Richard Dunbabin for a win the Masters Mens 40+ race and John Hill won from David Dodgson and Mike Quick in the 50+ race. Geoff Lewis, Bill Shackcloth and Ray King triumphed in the 60+ race.
The strength of the British Youths B classes in excellent and some very close racing saw Lucy Yates, Laura Evans and Nikki Smith taking the Girls Medals and Josh Hart, Matthew Pye and John Hilton the boys. Chris Wilson continued his dominant performances making it four wins out of four this year in the Youths A race. Liam ONeill and Daniel Scott were 2nd and 3rd. Harriet Hart, Natalie Gray and Rachel Ward took the medal positions in the Girls event.
The Junior and Senior races were run together and it was a junior, Maria Barrett, who crossed the line first with Seniors Caroline Jones, Gwen Kinsey and Jessica Turnbull following. Nicola Rowley and Laura Hook took the remaining Junior medals. An identical finish was in store for the Junior & Senior Mens race when another Junior, James Lock stormed home ahead of the trio of Seniors, Jon Fletcher, Gregan Clarkson and Andre van der Merwe. Toby Banfield and Stephen Campbell were 2nd and 3rd Juniors.
The day was a huge success helped by the generous support of Salford City Council and their staff, the excellent summer weather and the quality performances achieved by all the athletes. By the time you read this, the GB Team of over 100 athletes will have been finalised and in serious training for Monaco. We wish them well in their quest for medals.

What I Learned at Weymouth about sea swimming!posted by Andy Surplice on15-07-2005
I have competed twice at Weym outh now. One in the biggest storm the bay could produce, when it was just a question of survival and hopping through the massive wave, and this time when it was a fantastic day. But after the run, I went into the water, and boy was it cold! Despite having my 12yr old sons hat on, I just couldnt bring myself to put my head in the water properly. I seemed to forget all the coaching of the last 2 years (thats how long Ive been swimming). I had been hotly pursued by Melanie Evans into the water....unfortunately she had to contend with me battling with the cold, trying a combination of free, back and brest just to get round the course. After getting kicked a couple of times she took a huge detour and steamed past (but I beat her on the run to avenge Bath!!!). What an awful swim I had. The message for novices like me... as Mick Flaherty said afterwards...gho to the training days... practice swimming in the sea before a race. I went in for a practice afterwards just to prove to myself I can do it properly. Roll on Salford.
