If confirmation was needed that 2006 truly is sport's year of the woman, it surely came in Guatemala last week when Britain's modern pentathlon squad won team and relay world championship silver medals. Add these to numerous female achievements in the saddle (bike and horseback), on the football pitch, the gymnastic bars and bob skeleton and you can see why glasses should be charged with a grateful toast to "The Ladies" when the various annual sports awards get under way next month. We are also indebted to a number of readers who point out another worthy contender so far overlooked - 28-year-old Anna Hemmings (pictured), who has won back-to-back national, Euro and world championships to become our most successful caneoist ever.
