World Yth A Championships Italy - Rep No1posted by WCTAP Manager on16-08-2006
After the prospect of problems getting the pistols and ourselves through Heathrow on Monday morning it turned out to be smoother than ever before, for once they took notice of us and the airport checking in system worked well. Whilst hundreds of passengers stood outside the teminal building, one mention of what we were carrying paved the way to a rapid transition through to boarding the aircraft. The personal searches proved to be the only minor hold up, which is the main reason for so many flight delays.
On arrival at Rome we took over our vehicles, a 9 seater minibus and estate car, then drove over from west coast to east coast of Italy to the competition venue. All the baggage arrived with the exception of Bernies fencing bag, which was wrongly tagged by the airline as firearms! it was retained by the Italian Police, glad to say it is now with us and problem over. The hotel is very clean and tidy, but brand new and still in some areas unfinished. Rooms good, but again very minimum in them, adequate all the same. The athletes have at last found that they can adjust to the local food with ample amounts of pasta etc at every meal - I think Jack has decided to eat for England!
Yesterday was spent on getting our admin sorted, team meeting and light training with some dry firing, equipment checks and a run late afternoon. Today we swimming this morning followed by dry firing, fencing lesson and steady run this evening. We have the range from tomorrow for live firing.
Athletes are in good spirit and making the most ofthe advantage of being on site preparing for competition.
